Trinity County Sheriff’s Office Update on Explosive Device in Weaverville

Suspect Pipe Bomb

August 6, 2025

On August 6, 2025, at approximately 8:45 AM, a community member reported a suspicious item in the Community Forest near Mill Street in Weaverville, California.

Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and located a metal pipe, capped on both ends with visible drill holes. Due to its appearance, the item was treated as a potential Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Deputies immediately secured the area and requested assistance from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad.

The Bomb Squad arrived at approximately 12:00 PM and confirmed that the device was, in fact, a live IED. They took prompt action to render it safe, which was completed by 12:40 PM. Following this, the Bomb Squad conducted a thorough examination of the device remnants and will prepare a formal report of their findings.

A comprehensive search of the area was conducted, and no additional devices were found. At this time, there is no indication of further threat to public safety.

An investigator from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) also responded and is leading the ongoing criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident. All media inquiries regarding the investigation should be directed to the BLM.

As a precaution during the incident, public safety messages were issued through ReadyTrinity, advising residents to avoid the area. Those advisories have now been cancelled. We thank the public for their cooperation and assistance.

On August 6, 2025, at approximately 8:45 AM, a community member reported a suspicious item in the area of the Community Forest near Mill Street in Weaverville, California.

Trinity County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene and discovered a metal pipe, capped on both ends, with evidence of drilling. Based on its appearance, the item was treated as a possible Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Deputies immediately secured the area and requested assistance from the Shasta County Bomb Squad, which is currently enroute to the location.

As a precaution, the Community Forest area near Mill Street remains closed to the public while the investigation is ongoing.
